"We must have a foreign policy that is both strong and smart. Yes, the Republicans have been strong, but they haven't been smart. And the policy is one big mess, everyone knows it."
- Senator Chuck Schumer

“A woman’s body belongs to herself alone. It is her body. It does not belong to the Church. It does not belong to the United States of America or to any other Government of the face of the earth,” said Margaret Sanger, a leader in reproductive rights who opened the first birth control clinic in the U.S. Faye Wattleton, a nurse who saw women suffering from botched illegal abortions, stands up for reproductive freedom and other women’s rights. “Reproductive freedom is critical to a whole range of issues,” Wattleton said. “If we can't take charge of this most personal aspect of our lives, we can't take care of anything. It should not be seen as a privilege or as a benefit, but a fundamental human right.” March is Women’s History Month. Now is your chance stand with past and present leaders of reproductive health. View Article  Don't Let the Bush Administration and Telecom Companies Spy on Us!
All Action Alerts from Care2
The Bush administration has been trying with all its might to force Congress to grant the President broad spying powers.

Now, it's up to Congress to decide if the government can eavesdrop on Americans without a warrant, and whether or not telecommunications companies will get away with illegally helping the administration spy on us over the past six years.

For far too long, President Bush has been trying to expand his power at the expense of our freedom and the Constitution. The House of Representatives made a wise decision to let President Bush's reckless and unconstitutional spying bill expire. Now, they must stand strong and continue rejecting the administration’s fear mongering tactics.

Help protect our constitutional rights! Urge the House of Representatives to reject any legislation that does not restore judicial review and protect the privacy rights of innocent Americans.

View Article  Oppose South Africa's Plan to Kill Elephants
All Action Alerts from Care2
South Africa has announced it will reverse its 1995 ban on killing elephants and resume culling of elephants in May. Elephant family groups could be rounded up by helicopters and shot from the air by marksmen.

Culling has been reinstated due to fears of elephant overpopulation in protected areas and the habitat destruction that too many elephants can cause. But this plan disregards the fact that elephants are extremely intelligent, social creatures with strong family bonds. It is well known that elephants mourn their dead, and killing large numbers of these sensitive creatures is cruel and unethical.

Please urge the South African government to continue exploring non-lethal options for dealing with growing elephant populations.

View Article  Home Foreclosure Crisis can be Stopped! Support S. 2636 in This Week's Vote
All Action Alerts from Care2
Thanks to years of reckless and abusive lending practices, foreclosure rates are skyrocketing. This nationwide crisis threatens some of America's most vulnerable citizens, their neighborhoods and entire communities, and our national economy. But this week the Senate is voting on the Foreclosure Prevention Act (S. 2636). If passed, this commonsense solution will allow victims of abusive lending who are facing foreclosures to stay in their homes while they work through the bankruptcy courts to repay the debt. By passing the Foreclosure Prevention Act, we'll not only be helping over 600,000 families stand up to abusive lending companies, but we'll be helping entire communities facing lower property values, and the economy overall. Time is running out. Urge your Senator to support S. 2636, the Foreclosure Prevention Act, today.

View Article  Wolves Delisted: Protest Now!
All Action Alerts from Care2
The Bush/Cheney administration has just eliminated federal protections for wolves in Greater Yellowstone and the Northern Rockies, opening the door to the slaughter of hundreds of America's most beloved wolves.

This decision leaves the region's wolves at the mercy of outrageous state management plans that could lead to the killing of all but 300 wolves – eliminating 80% of all the wild wolves in Greater Yellowstone and the Northern Rockies.

We need to let the Bush/Cheney administration know that we strongly oppose this decision to remove Greater Yellowstone wolves from the list of federally protected threatened and endangered species.

Please sign our petition of protest and demand that the administration reverse its misguided decision and continue protecting Greater Yellowstone wolves under the Endangered Species Act.

Recently released reports uncovered a huge failure at the federal agency in charge of mine safety. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) failed to fine more than 4,000 safety & health violations over the last six years for mines that broke regulations. Richard Stickler, the man responsible for mine safety in this country, used to be a coal mining manager and executive. President Bush twice bypassed the Senate to appoint Stickler, despite loud protests from anyone familiar with his egregiously anti-safety record. It's time the safety of America's workers came first! Sign the letter to Mr. Stickler below and add your ideas on how he can do his job.
