"We must have a foreign policy that is both strong and smart. Yes, the Republicans have been strong, but they haven't been smart. And the policy is one big mess, everyone knows it."
- Senator Chuck Schumer

In his two years on the job of protecting America's wildlife and wildlands, Interior Secretary Kempthorne hasn't listed a single new species under the Endangered Species Act - even though federal biologists warn that at least 280 native species could disappear forever without such protections.

In fact, under Secretary Kempthorne, the Department of the Interior has:

  • repeatedly delayed protections for polar bears - which could disappear from America in 50 years if we continue to do nothing to save them,
  • removed vital federal protections for gray wolves in Greater Yellowstone,
  • and denied critical protections for jaguars, wolverines, and other imperiled wildlife.

It is Congress's job to hold the Secretary accountable when he fails to do his job. Please send a message now to urge your U.S. Representative to call for Congressional hearings on Secretary Kempthorne's failure to protect America's wildlife.

View Article  Help a Child Smile
All Action Alerts from Care2
For more than 25 years, Operation Smile has been helping children around the world afflicted with facial deformities such as cleft lips and cleft palates. A child born with a facial deformity is mocked and ridiculed. Eating and speaking are difficult. These children often end up totally dependent on their families who may even shut them away, believing they are cursed. Children who grow up with unrepaired cleft lips and cleft palates have difficulty developing social skills or leading productive lives. Since 1982, Operation Smile's volunteer medical teams have treated more that 115,000 children providing free surgery, medical care and follow up treatment. Now they are going to Madagascar. This is the organization's second medical mission to this country and we are asking that people send messages of hope to the children who will be receiving the corrective surgery. These children are now ostracized and objects of ridicule, but they will soon be able to smile without fear. Won't you help encourage them to smile? Send a message of hope.

View Article  Reject President Bush's Anti-Choice Nominee, Robert Conrad
All Action Alerts from Care2
Do you remember Richard Honaker? He was President Bush's pick for a lifetime appointment to a federal district court who tried to outlaw abortion three times in Wyoming.

Now, Bush is at it again! This time, he and his allies in the Senate are pushing for a new anti-choice nominee as judge on the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals: Robert Conrad.

Robert Conrad has called Planned Parenthood a "radical, pro-abortion fringe group" that "promotes a radical abortion agenda." What's more, from 1983 to 1986, Conrad served on the board of directors for a so-called "crisis pregnancy center" that provided medically inaccurate information about pregnancy, contraception and abortion.

Clearly, he isn't fair-minded – and he doesn't deserves a lifetime appointment as a federal judge!

Urge your senators to reject the nomination of Robert Conrad today.

View Article  Ease the Blockade on Healthcare in Gaza
All Action Alerts from Care2
Nael al Kurdi was a student by day and sold falafel at night. When he was diagnosed with cancer, he traveled from Gaza to Egypt for treatment. But once the blockade was put in place, even though Nael petitioned the Israeli authorities repeatedly, he was not allowed to leave Gaza. He died as a result - he was only 21. This story comes from a recent article by the BBC that describes life in Gaza as an "open prison". The territory's almost compete isolation is: * destabilizing the food supply so that an increasing number of children suffer from malnutrition; * endangering lives due lack of access to medical care and supplies; and * creating shortages of fuel and electricity so that outages are common and hospitals experience power cuts for 8-12 hours a day. The situation in Gaza is incredibly dire - surely there is a way for Israel to see to its security needs without creating a humanitarian and human rights tragedy! Tell Israel to ease restrictions for medical travel and supplies!
