Under the Antiquities Act of 1906, the president can protect areas of historic or scientific interest without congressional approval. President Bush is planning to use this power to designate marine monuments - that is, national parks for oceans. Such a designation would protect these areas, which include rich coral reefs and magnificent sea life, from fishing, oil exploitation and other commercial development. The polar bear - an icon of a rapidly disappearing Arctic - has just been listed as "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act. While this is a symbolic step, we need to do much more to protect the polar bear from global warming, which is threatening wildlife not just in the Arctic, but across the world. The polar bear currently faces great challenges, such as oil and gas development in its rapidly melting habitat. The recent listing, for example, includes a loophole that enables energy exploration to continue in the Arctic despite its obvious threat to the bear's survival. Early this June, a historic bipartisan bill is expected to come to a vote in the U.S. Senate. The Climate Security Act would be the biggest step ever taken to reduce global warming pollution and will meet the 2% annual targets through a cap and trade program. The Act also invests dedicated resources in restoring and protecting natural resources threatened by global warming, supports investments in alternative energy and provides assistance to low-income Americans to make the transition to a clean energy future.

But we must act now.... Scientists say that 20 to 30 percent of all species could be put on a path toward extinction if global warming continues unchecked!

There is a section of the Pacific Ocean twice the size of the continental United States called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Within it, 100 million tons of plastic swirl in a vortex of currents. There is so much plastic in the water that it outnumbers zooplankton by six to one!

This plastic ends up in the stomachs of marine birds and animals. In fact, one million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals die globally each year due to ingestion of or entanglement in plastics.

More than 155,000 women in America's armed services have been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan since 2002. But as these distinguished women return home, they are finding a veterans health care system better equipped to deal with the needs of men. A bipartisan group of U.S. Senators introduced the Women Veterans Health Care Improvement Act of 2008 (S.2799) to provide for the unique needs of our female veterans. The legislation will authorize programs to improve care for Military Sexual Trauma (MST), increase research on the current barriers to care, and expand women veterans staff positions at the VA.
