"We must have a foreign policy that is both strong and smart. Yes, the Republicans have been strong, but they haven't been smart. And the policy is one big mess, everyone knows it."
- Senator Chuck Schumer

President Bush has been working with environmental conservation groups to create a list of endangered ocean areas around U.S. territories. Under the Antiquities Act of 1906, the president can protect areas of historic or scientific interest without congressional approval. President Bush is planning to use this power to designate marine monuments - that is, national parks for oceans. Such a designation would protect these areas, which include rich coral reefs and magnificent sea life, from fishing, oil exploitation and other commercial development. The Bush Administration proposal is an important step in the continuing health of our world's oceans and ecosystems! It is important for the president to know that the public is in favor of his initiative. Voice your thanks to President Bush, and tell him you support his unprecedented marine conservation program today.

All Action Alerts from Care2
The polar bear - an icon of a rapidly disappearing Arctic - has just been listed as "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act. While this is a symbolic step, we need to do much more to protect the polar bear from global warming, which is threatening wildlife not just in the Arctic, but across the world. The polar bear currently faces great challenges, such as oil and gas development in its rapidly melting habitat. The recent listing, for example, includes a loophole that enables energy exploration to continue in the Arctic despite its obvious threat to the bear's survival. You can help by telling Congress to cosponsor the Polar Bear Seas Protection Act and save the polar bear and other wildlife threatened by global warming. Please sign today!

View Article  Save Wildlife from Global Warming: Support the Climate Security Act
All Action Alerts from Care2
Early this June, a historic bipartisan bill is expected to come to a vote in the U.S. Senate. The Climate Security Act would be the biggest step ever taken to reduce global warming pollution and will meet the 2% annual targets through a cap and trade program. The Act also invests dedicated resources in restoring and protecting natural resources threatened by global warming, supports investments in alternative energy and provides assistance to low-income Americans to make the transition to a clean energy future.

But we must act now.... Scientists say that 20 to 30 percent of all species could be put on a path toward extinction if global warming continues unchecked!

Sign the petition urging your senators to support strong global warming legislation.

View Article  Rise Above Plastics
All Action Alerts from Care2

There is a section of the Pacific Ocean twice the size of the continental United States called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Within it, 100 million tons of plastic swirl in a vortex of currents. There is so much plastic in the water that it outnumbers zooplankton by six to one!

This plastic ends up in the stomachs of marine birds and animals. In fact, one million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals die globally each year due to ingestion of or entanglement in plastics.

Plastic is forever, with virtually every piece of petroleum based plastic ever made still in existence. That's why it's so critical to our oceans and beaches that we dramatically reduce our use of plastics, especially single-use plastics, starting today.

You can make a difference for our world's oceans, waves and beaches -- pledge to rise above plastics today.

THE PLEDGE

I commit to do my part to rise above plastics and protect the world's oceans, waves and beaches from plastic pollution. I will do this by:

*Using reusable bottles for my water and other drinks. By using just one reusable bottle, I will keep 167 single-use plastic bottles from entering ...   more »

Oprah Winfrey recently started a 21-day cleanse diet to "jump start an inner makeover," and the diet involves eliminating all caffeine, sugar, alcohol, gluten and animal products. In her blog about this experiment, she writes, "How can you say you're trying to spiritually evolve, without even a thought about what happens to the animals whose lives are sacrificed in the name of gluttony?"

We say, Go Oprah! Go Vegan! Oprah Winfrey has the media reach and personal integrity to spread the word about the ethical and environmental reasons to embrace a vegetarian and/or vegan diet and lifestyle. Let's thank Oprah for embarking on this journey and encourage her to continue using her visibility to promote the ethical and environmental benefits of veganism to her audience.

View Article  Improve Health Care For Female Veterans
All Action Alerts from Care2
More than 155,000 women in America's armed services have been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan since 2002. But as these distinguished women return home, they are finding a veterans health care system better equipped to deal with the needs of men. A bipartisan group of U.S. Senators introduced the Women Veterans Health Care Improvement Act of 2008 (S.2799) to provide for the unique needs of our female veterans. The legislation will authorize programs to improve care for Military Sexual Trauma (MST), increase research on the current barriers to care, and expand women veterans staff positions at the VA. Urge your Senator to give our women veterans the specialized care they deserve by supporting this bill!
