Former Republican state Sen. Guy J. Velella was sentenced in June to a year in jail. The charge was accepting bribes.
Velella was released today after serving a little more than three months in Rikers Island.
After admitting he helped those who paid bribes win public contracts, he was jailed on June 21.
Velella, his father and two other men were indicted in May 2002 on 25-counts. The indictment alleges he accepted at least $137,000 in bribes from contractors from 1995 through June 2000.

Three top political aides to House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Tex.) were indicted Tuesday on charges of illegally raising political funds from corporations in 2002, much of which was funneled into the Republican takeover of the Texas legislature.

Las Vegas Republican City Councilwoman Janet Moncrief pleaded not guilty to felony charges of filing false campaign finance reports. Moncrief, 45, appeared in Clark County District Court During for a brief arraignment hearing, and Judge Nancy Saitta scheduled trial for Feb. 7. A grand jury indicted Moncrief last month on four felony counts of submitting false documents to a public agency and one felony count of perjury. If convicted, she faces a possible sentence of probation to 24 years in prison and a $25,000 fine. more » |
