Hurricane season approaches. A terrorist attack could happen at any time. Tornados. Earthquakes. And that mess in New Orleans. Who provides relief in any of these situations?
FEMA.
And since Brownie left, who’s heading the organization?
No one.
Why?
According to the New York Times, no one wants the job. One person offered the job was Los Angeles general manager of emergency planning, Ellis M. Stanley. Ellis told the Times, “You don't take the fire chief job after someone has burned down the city unless you are going to be able to do it in the right fashion.”
Michael Chertoff, the secretary of Homeland Insecurity, acknowledged the difficulty in finding a replacement to head FEMA as well as other agencies under his department’s banner. Of 30 top positions, 11 are currently unfilled. That’s one third of Homeland Insecurity not under any leadership whatsoever.
Throughout these agencies there are qualified career employees who would do a better job than the current Secretary or any of the Bush cronies. However, no one with experience within the department is being considered for FEMA or the other vacant positions.
So here’s a name Bush should consider to replace Brownie. Myron Krause is the current commissioner of the Arabian Horse Association. Worked well for Bush last time.
