"We must have a foreign policy that is both strong and smart. Yes, the Republicans have been strong, but they haven't been smart. And the policy is one big mess, everyone knows it."
- Senator Chuck Schumer
View Article  Right wing calls Stone brilliant
The right wing is very confused about Oliver Stone's new movie, "World Trade Center." Their problem is that they love this film.

L. Brent Bozell III, founder of the Parents Television Council, called it “a masterpiece.”

Conservative columnist Cal Thomas said the film is "one of the greatest pro-American, pro-family, pro-faith, pro-male, flag-waving, God Bless America films you will ever see.”

“God Bless Oliver Stone” wrote Clifford May in the National Review.

To these groups, Oliver Stone represents everything bad about liberal Hollywood. He made the anti-war films "Born on the Fourth of July," "Platoon" and "Heaven & Earth." He ...   more »
View Article  Hey, how’s that war going for you, Bush?
Mahmoud al-Mashhadani, the Sunni speaker of the Iraqi parliament said, “We know there was a corrupt regime in Saddam, but a regime should be removed by surgery, not by butchering. The U.S. occupation is butcher’s work under the slogan of democracy and human rights and justice. Leave us to solve our problems. We don’t need an agenda from outside.”

Rep. Gil Gutknecht (R-Minn.) was a strong supporter of Bush’s war. The San Francisco Chronicle reports that after returning from Iraq recently, he said, “Essentially, what the White House is saying is, ‘Stay the course, stay the course.’ I don’t think ...   more »
View Article  Why Israel has as much right to exist as any other country

I can’t believe I even have to write this piece, but previous posts on this topic have been nothing more than anti-Semitic bigoted pieces of trash. I could have simply deleted the narrow-minded diatribes, but I like bigots to simply show their true colors.

Using the logic in these posts, the United States has no right to exist. We took the land from Native Americans. Just because three generations of my family was born here, I apparently have no right to be here. I should be living in Romania.

But wait. I guess I really have no right to live ...   more »

View Article  Fraud and waste at Homeland Security
Susan Collins (R-Me.) is the chair of the Senate's Homeland Security committee.

An audit of credit cards details millions of dollars of fraud and waste in the department her committee oversees. The New York Times reports Collins says “It seems no matter where we look at Homeland Security, we find a pattern of waste, fraud and abuse.”

The outrage is noted but when will the investigation begin? Collins has announced no intention of actually holding officials accountable.

The problem with Homeland Security since its inception has been the appointment of incompetents and cronies. The Senate is responsible for abdicating its ...   more »
View Article  Georgia Republicans reject extremist with ties to Abramoff
Despite high profile endorsements, Ralph Reed lost his bid to be the Republican nominee for lieutenant governor. Why is this important? Had a certain Republican lost his bid for governor of Texas in 1994, he would have had no base to run for president. So all we can say to Republicans in Georgia is thank you.

Reed has been an associate of Jack Abramoff since they met in college.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that "A Senate Indian Affairs Committee, chaired by U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), concluded that Reed had been paid $5.3 million by two casino-owning Indian tribes, ...   more »
View Article  Can the Democrats actually win this fall?
Polls are leaning in the Democrats' favor. And finally corporate media is reporting that turning tide.

The Washington Post writes:

"Virtually every public opinion measure points to a Category 4 or 5 hurricane gathering. Bush's job-approval rating is below 40 percent, and congressional job approval is more than 10 percentage points lower. Only a quarter of the electorate thinks the country is moving in the right direction, and voters are unhappy with the economy under Bush. Finally, Democrats hold a double-digit lead as the party the public trusts to do a better job of tackling the nation's problems and the ...   more »
