"We must have a foreign policy that is both strong and smart. Yes, the Republicans have been strong, but they haven't been smart. And the policy is one big mess, everyone knows it."
- Senator Chuck Schumer
View Article  Frist Lies to Keep Medical License
Senate Majority Leader and presumed presidential candidate Bill Frist sent in his paperwork to renew his medical license.

Tennessee regulations require 40 hours of continuing medical education every two years. The papers he signed claimed he had completed that requirement. He has not. The state's law says that doctors who do not meet the continuing education requirement “will be subject to disciplinary action.”

Frist says he is working to clear up the problem.

The problem isn't Frist's not taking the 40 hours of classes. He was busy being a Senator. He hasn't been practicing medicine. The problem is lying on ...   more »
View Article  Rumsfeld uses old tactic
Donald Rumsfeld is on the offensive. The war criminal said critics of the Bush Wars “seem not to have learned history’s lessons.”

Well, elections are coming and the tactic has worked in three previous elections. And if Democrats roll over and allow the administration to get away with it, it will work again.

What's so amazing is that Rumsfeld has the audacity to accuse those criticizing the war of not learning from history. Rumsfeld and his warmonger friends are the ones who haven't learned - not even from their own mistakes.

On Radioleft, we warned repeatedly that Iraqis would not ...   more »
View Article  Ford needs to get off its ass and stop whining
The New York Times reports that Ford Motor Company is "is pondering a wide variety of steps that are aimed at reversing Ford’s losses, resizing the company and enabling it to withstand brutal industry competition." Plans might include selling Jaguar and Land Rover.

Several years ago on Radioleft, we interviewed someone in the auto industry and asked about why gas mileage hasn't improved much over the past 30 years. My 1975 Datsun got the best gas mileage I have ever gotten.

Asked about SUVs, this auto exec claimed that there was no demand for better gas mileage. I said, "Do ...   more »
View Article  Tell France to shut up
France is hesitant to commit troops to a peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon without a well-defined mission, according to NPR.

Sounds more like an excuse than a reason to me.

When first asked to commit troops and lead the peacekeeping force, France agreed, then backed down, and then offered 200 troops. Only after Italy agreed to lead the force did France again claim it wanted to lead the mission and now is prepared to send 2,000 troops with one caveat. The mission must be well-defined.

As a leader, are they waiting for someone else to do the defining? Are they ...   more »
View Article  Bush's education plan receives an F
The right wing's attempt to destroy public education is running into a snag. The alternative charter school that have been rammed down our throats are performing poorly - more poorly than public schools.

The strategy was to test kids to death. That strategy worked in Texas where Bush managed to push the public school system to dead last among states while he was governor. Those endless, useless tests were mandated nationwide. Outrage at how terribly students did on tests that tested nothing that was taught in schools except during weeks of classes on how to take tests brought consensus on ...   more »
View Article  Involuntary recalls in the military
The Associated Press reports that "The U.S. Marine Corps ... has been authorized to recall thousands of Marines to active duty, primarily because of a shortage of volunteers for duty in Iraq and Afghanistan."

Up to 2,500 Marines will be involuntarily recalled at a time, with no cap to the number forced to serve over the coming years. The recalls begin within the next few months.

These involuntary recalls were used at the beginning of Bush's Iraq War. The army has used involuntary recalls since Bush's Belligerencies and has forced 14,000 former soldiers back into service.

Marines enlist for four ...   more »
