EDITORIAL PAGES AGREE: TIME TO RELEASE MCCAIN TAX RETURN

Editorial pages around the country are weighing on the McCain campaign's hypocrisy on tax returns and transparency. Despite his efforts to craft an image as a champion of transparency in government, Senator McCain refuses to apply those standards of accountability and openness to himself. In addition to releasing just two years of his own tax returns--far less than any party nominee since Ronald Reagan in 1980--the McCain campaign is refusing to release Mrs. McCain's tax returns, even if she becomes First Lady. The following are excerpts of editorials from around the country calling for openness and transparency from the McCain campaign:
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: Need for Openness Now Even More Urgent. "Cindy McCain, wife of Sen. John McCain, apparently thinks she lives in her own world. But with her husband now the GOP's presumed nominee for the White House, she needs to realize, finally, that she lives in the public world. The world in which public officials open their tax returns for public viewing. Cindy McCain contends that she won't do that, that she and her husband always have filed separate returns and that her money -- a considerable sum -- is her own. Maybe if she ... more »

David Safavian: Abramoff's Bag Man
by

Democratic National Committee:Research
David Safavian, the Bush Administration's former chief contracting and procurement official at OMB, is in court today for his ongoing Federal corruption trial, in connection with Jack Abramoff's questionable business dealings with the Bush Administration and Republican members of Congress. Safavian repeatedly told investigators that he had no ongoing business with the Republican mega-lobbyist. However, during that time, Safavian was helping Abramoff lease government property controlled by the agency where he worked. He gave him advice over email, reviewed memos that Abramoff was sending to other GSA employees, and set up a meeting for Abramoff's wife and business partner with Administration officials. To say thank you, Abramoff took him to Scotland on a golf junket with Republican members of Congress. But Safavian didn't rest on his laurels. Up until his arrest, he was busy setting contracting policy for billions in federal funds earmarked for the Gulf Coast relief effort. This is what Bush's policies of political cronyism and patronage produces: political hacks and lobbyists handling billions of dollars in taxpayer funds, while jetting off to Europe on trips paid for by their old lobbying partners.

McCain Takes The Doubletalk Express For A Spin on

This morning's appearance on NBC's Meet the Press was just the latest stop on John McCain's double talk express. McCain has tried to cast himself as a straight shooter, yet his answers to important issues continue to shift. Since 2000, John McCain has changed his position on abortion, gay marriage, creationism, and tax cuts. But one recent admission by John McCain appears to be true. As Russert noted, John McCain told America in a recent interview that he "doesn't like to lose."
"This morning, Senator John McCain embraced a man he once called an 'evil influence' on the Republican Party," said DNC Communications Director Karen Finney. "McCain has changed his position so many times that Americans can't know where he stands on anything. Unfortunately, it appears that McCain's admission that he 'doesn't like to lose' is the most straight talk voters should expect from him for the next two years."
Below is a document from DNC research:
SENATOR JOHN MCCAIN:
BUILDING A BRIDGE TO THE RIGHT WING IN THREE EASY STEPS
STEP ONE: SAY YOU'RE BEING CONSISTENT AS YOU CHANGE YOUR MIND
RUSSERT: Are you concerned that people are going to say, I see, John McCain tried ... more »

MUST READ: John McCain's "Uber-Lobbyist" and His Foreign Clients
by

The Washington Post reveals the cozy relationship between John McCain and the Washington lobbyists he once railed against. Despite his rhetoric about reducing the role of lobbyists in Washington, McCain's inner circle is dominated by lobbyists like Charlie Black, who the Post describes as a "longtime uber-lobbyist" and "a pioneer of the revolving door between campaign consulting and lobbying." Despite Black's claims that his personal policy is to never lobby the candidates he has worked for, the Post highlights meetings Black set up between McCain and his clients and outlines Black's efforts to help some of the world's most notorious dictators and tyrants "burnish their reputations" in Washington. The following are excerpts of today's story: McCain Adviser's Work As Lobbyist Criticized Foreign Clients Included Notorious Rulers By Michael D. Shear and Jeffrey H. Birnbaum Washington Post Staff Writers Thursday, May 22, 2008; A01 "Longtime uber-lobbyist Charles R. Black Jr. is John McCain's man in Washington, a political maestro who is hoping to guide his friend, the senator from Arizona, to the presidency this November. But for half a decade in the 1980s, Black was also Jonas Savimbi's man in the capital city. His lobbying firm received millions ... more »

McCain Myth Buster: John McCain and Transparency in Lobbying
by

John McCain says "[e]thics and transparency are not election year buzz words; they are the obligations of democracy and the duties of honorable public service." Yet his top campaign advisors have no problem lying about their lobbying records. Their excuse? Americans don't care--something McCain has yet to say if he agrees with. [johnmccain.com, accessed 5/19/08] In fact just yesterday senior advisor Charlie Black told reporters, according to the Wall Street Journal, that he complied with the new campaign ethics rules "before there even was a rule" even though he lobbied from the back of the Straight Talk Express last year. Black's opinion on if any of this matters to America's voters? "Hell no. This is complete inside-the-beltway nonsense." When asked if he agreed with Black's assessment, McCain refused to directly answer the question and instead spouted rhetoric, saying "we wanted to make sure there was an effective and comprehensive and transparent policy towards lobbyist…" [Wall Street Journal, 5/19/08; foxnews.com, 5/19/08] After all of John McCain's talk about corruption in Washington, now he isn't practicing what he preached. Ethics and transparency seem to be just buzz words for McCain, who clearly will do or say ... more »
