To Senator Charles Schumer,
To Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton,
To Congressman Tim Bishop,
As you will see, I just faxed a letter to
Speaker Dennis Hastert and you will see how visibly angry I am at the failure
of our government during this past week in response to Hurricane Katrina.
I have asked Speaker Hastert to go into
every single appropriations package that is laden with pork barrel spending and
get that money back for these people to help them rebuild their lives and to
rebuild that storm ravaged region.
I am also strongly urging all three of you
to take President Chavez and President Hugo up on their offers to help our
citizens. I am also calling for the end to the Cuban Embargo as a direct
result of Pres. Castro’s offer.
This past week showed so many the true
weakness of our country and that angers me. No, we are off fighting an
illegal war and for what? Oh yeah, oil! You do not use bombs to
bring any country freedom and democracy; you do so by setting an example.
What a marvelous display we have shown the world what freedom and democracy
really means in this country this past week. We failed these people.
Sincerely,
Mary MacElveen

To Speaker
Hastert,
September
3, 2005
I have just your callous statement where
you said this about the city of New
Orleans, "It makes no sense to spend billions of
dollars to rebuild a city that's seven feet under sea level… It looks
like a lot of that place could be bulldozed." I find that remark both
heinous and very telling. It just goes to prove that once again that
Republicans have no heart what so ever. This city was the home to many
and they lost everything. Did you hear me? They lost everything.
Some even paid the ultimate price and that was with their lives. Yet your
president ignored the fact that the levees surrounding it needed to be
reinforced and then had the audacity to cut the funds from that job being
accomplished and I sincerely hope that the Republican Party pays the price for
such stupidity and fiscal incompetence. Some Homeland Security we have
here in the United States of
America. It is more like Homeland
Insecurity if you ask me. God help us all should another fierce storm like
Katrina hits us or another terrorist attack. Katrina just proved how
unprepared our government is to responding to the needs of her people.
So, as you stated where you think nothing of spending billions to repair this
once glorious city, President Bush and the rest of the Republican leadership
along with some Democrats thought nothing of spending billions upon billions to
fund an illegal invasion in Iraq where the ultimate result of that failed
mission is where our soldiers keep on dying. Those men and women should
have been home here to prepare for domestic terrorism and as we have just seen
the people in this storm ravaged region are being terrorized day in and day
out.
What makes absolutely no sense to me is to
give billions of our tax money over to corporations such as Halliburton at the
expense of the American people. Now, I have just heard where The Navy has hired
Houston-based Halliburton Co. to restore electric power, repair roofs and
remove debris at three naval facilities in Mississippi damaged by Hurricane Katrina.
Haven't we given them enough money already? They should be doing this for
free.
Now compare that to what President Hugo
Chavez along with the people of Venezuela
want to do for us out of the goodness of their hearts. Now remember that
this is the same man who was threatened by Pat Robertson
where a death threat was made and yet no arrest has been made. Pres.
Chavez has offered Governor Kathleen Babineaux Blanco of Louisiana aid in the
immediate form of $1 million (US) cash and 120 specialists in First Aid and
search & rescue from the 'Simon Bolivar' Humanitarian Response Team
coordinated via Petroleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) US subsidiary CITGO. Now
that is a leader if you ask me and one who is truly looking out for the welfare
of the survivors of Hurricane Katrina. But, that is not all that he wants
to do for us. He has offered with no contract involved two mobile
hospitals with a capacity of 150 people each at a time; ten water purification
stations; eight electric generators, each with a capacity of 850 kilowatts; 20
tons of drinking water; 50 tons of canned food; and 5,000 blankets. The offer
will be made available in immediate fashion, should the Government of the United States
choose to accept it, through the CITGO Corporation. Also President Fidel
Castro has offered to send 1,100 to this storm ravaged region. I say end
the Cuban Embargo now as a result of President Castro's offer. President
Castro has even shown more compassion than President Bush. Both President
Chavez and President Castro know how to take care of their citizens and are not
seen going to million dollar fundraisers or taking five week vacations.
But, if you are so damn worried about the
billions it will take to repair this city, how about you show some leadership
yourself and for the sake of national security by ordering the House to go into
every single pork barrel appropriations package and start ripping them up where
Wal Mart will not receive $37 million dollars for a road expansion project and
where Cong. Don Young of Alaska will not get $223 million dollars to build a
bridge that will be named after him. Also for the sake of national
security take back any tax payer money already handed over to Halliburton and
send those funds to the people of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.
I think that this past week proved to the
American people how ill served they are by this president, the Republican Party
and our government. One only has to view the images broadcasted into every
person's home to show that. If anything this president has committed
treason by failing this region where the ramifications will be felt by the
entire nation. He endangered the lives of many Americans and I am but one
who is calling for his immediate impeachment.
Sincerely,
Mary MacElveen
