To Governor
Blanco, June 18,
2006
I
guess you were NOT listening to our Democratic candidate John F. Kerry as he
ran for president in 2004. This is what he said of the abortion issue in a
debate held on October 14, 2004: “I
believe that I can't legislate or transfer to another American citizen my
article of faith. What is an article of faith for me is not something that I
can legislate on somebody who doesn't share that article of faith. I believe
that choice is a woman's choice. It's between a woman, God and her doctor. And
that's why I support that. Now, I will not allow somebody to come in and change
Roe v. Wade.” In essence what this means, Gov. Blanco is that you cannot
legislate morality. It also means that you as an elected official cannot force
your personal faith on others that do not share it since you are supposed to
represent all people and not just some.
I am surprised at you
in reading a Reuters article that stated: “Louisiana Democratic Gov.
Kathleen Blanco signed into law a ban on most abortions, which would be
triggered if the U.S. Supreme Court overturns its 1973 ruling legalizing the
procedure, a spokesman said on Saturday.”
It then went onto report: “The ban would
apply to all abortions, even in cases of rape or incest, except when the
mother's life is threatened. It is similar to a
Should abortion once again become illegal we as a
country will return to the days of back-alley abortions that will endanger the
lives of women across this country. If that were to happen, we must demand
that every elected official be shown the pictures of any woman that has died as
a result. Imagine the horror of any police officer arriving on a scene to see
a butchered woman along with her fetus. Can you actually in good conscience
approve of making abortion illegal when these first responders will have to go
through the bloodied crime scene?
You know damn well that women with financial means
will find a way to secretly have this procedure done and where it is safe. The
middle class and the poor will not.
You have more important matters to concern yourself
with in the rebuilding of your state after Katrina and planning for the next
deadly hurricane instead of promoting a law that violates a woman’s right
to choose. You want to end unwanted pregnancies, tell your conservative constituents
that will only happen through real contraceptive courses in which condoms are
handed out.
Sincerely,
Mary MacElveen
