"We must have a foreign policy that is both strong and smart. Yes, the Republicans have been strong, but they haven't been smart. And the policy is one big mess, everyone knows it."
- Senator Chuck Schumer

Inquiring minds want to know.

Friday morning on The Diane Rehm Show, a caller from Saint Louis asked a question of William Kristol about his daughter who is a student at Washington University in Saint Louis. Before he could complete his question, Diane Rehm cut him off with the comment, “We won’t go there.”

We won’t go where, Diane? Perhaps, the gentleman was going to compliment his daughter on her good judgement in going to Washington University.

We suspect, however, that Diane knows the dirt and wanted to protect her right-wing extremist neo-con buddy, Bill Kristol.

So, what is it that Diane ...   more »

October 9th,2006: Thank you to Anonymous for correctly identifying the author of this poem as Carol Wimmer. We had it incorrectly attributed to Maya Angelou.

Thanks to James Hill of Chicago for sending us this poem. GS

When I say... "I am a Christian"
I'm not shouting "I'm clean livin'."
I'm whispering "I was lost,
Now I'm found and forgiven."

When I say... "I am a Christian"
I don't speak of this with pride.
I'm confessing that I stumble
and need Christ to be my guide.

When I say... "I am a Christian"
I'm not trying to be strong.
I'm professing that I'm weak
And need His strength to carry on.

When I say... "I am a Christian"
I'm not bragging of success.
I'm admitting I have failed
And need God to clean my mess.

When I say... "I am a Christian"
I'm not claiming to be perfect,
My flaws are far too visible
But, God believes I am worth it.

When I say... "I am a Christian"
I still feel the sting of pain.
I have my share of heartaches
So I call upon His name.

When I say... "I am a Christian"
I'm not holier than thou,
I'm just a simple sinner
Who received God's good grace, somehow!

View Article  Karl Rove plagiarizes from Joseph Goebbels with his "complete victory" remarks

Karl Rove has been going around the country calling for "Complete victory over terrorism."

These remarks were plagiarized from Joseph Goebbels 1943 "Total War" speech in which Goebbels calls for "total victory over our enemies."

In addition to the similarity of Rove's and Goebbels' views is the fact that Bush, Rove, Hitler, and Goebbels only spoke before carefully selected groups of supporters. The biggest difference between Rove and Goebbels is that Goebbels thinks "the burdens should be shared equally between high and low and rich and poor," whereas Rove and Bush think that the poor should fight and die while the wealthy stay home and make money.

Following is an excerpt from Joseph Goebbels' "Total War" speech. The similarities with current Republican propaganda are unmistakable.

The English maintain that the German people has lost faith in victory.

I ask you: Do you believe with the Führer and us in the final total victory of the German people?

View Article  Why Do Parties Field Flawed Candidates?
Monday , May 15, 2006 By Martin Frost One of the trickiest parts of the battle for control of Congress is that a political party sometimes doesnt field its strongest potential candidate for a particular House or Senate race and thus misses a golden opportunity to gain a seat. Ive seen this firsthand over the past 30 years that I have been involved in national politics. Sometimes the Republicans will nominate a far right-winger in a moderate Congressional district. Or the Democratic Party will nominate a strong liberal to run in a conservative district. And then there are those times ...   more »

by Dr. Eyad El Sarraj

Dr. Eyad El Sarraj and the Gaza Community Mental Health Programme he founded ( http://www.gcmhp.net ) are Rebuilding Alliance partners in the Rachel Corrie Rebuilding Campaign in Gaza.

Two days ago I met the New York Times correspondent. He was sad. He told me after his grim tour of Shifa hospital, the major hospital of Gaza strip, that there is a serious shortage of hospital drugs. He, like me and every one here are alarmed as the living conditions are fast deteriorating towards a humanitarian disaster. The Minister of Finance has announced that there are no salaries for the 150,000 Palestinian civil servants. UN projects are suspended because Israel doesn't allow building material to cross the border. An Israeli fuel supplier announced it will stop supplying the Palestinians with petrol and gas. The traffic of goods at the border is a trickle.
