I remember just after the ‘04 election and Bush was standing on his pulpit talking about spending all this “political capital” he now owned. And he was going to spend some of it on fixing Social Security. By fix, he meant privatize it, which would have destroyed it much like Bear Stearns got obliterated. The media man crush love for Bush was oozing out of most of the fish wraps and TV sets. MSNBC almost immediately hired Tucker Carlson to prove to Bush that they did indeed love him dearly.

Anyway, all the liberal blogs stuck together and said no way. The idiot media talking heads were screaming at the Democratic Party to come up with some ideas to fix Social Security or it would be bankrupt by 2018 or something. They stood fast and as Duncan points out, it was Nancy Pelosi that told them to shove it.

Dirty f*&king hippie bloggers knew how this game worked, that if the Democrats offered a plan they’d ensure that something would happen and that something would inevitably be pretty much what Bush wanted. Our plan was to not offer any plan, and in fact go ...   more »

Not only is Dave Reichert an ineffective congressman, but he has a twisted sense of humor, as the Tacoma News Tribune’s Niki Sullivan reports:

Right now, U.S. Rep. Dave Reichert is up. He repeated a joke I first heard him tell at the Pierce County Republicans’ Lincoln Day breakfast earlier this year. It involves an airplane that’s going to crash, one fewer parachute than passengers and, ultimately, Hillary Clinton dying.

It sounds, as David Goldstein observes, like an unoriginal, crass schoolyard joke I used to hear all the time from classmates when I was younger and attending elementary school. [..] The punch line relies on the assumption that the adult in question is stupid.

Now, Reichert or anybody else can argue that Hillary Clinton is ambitious, or stubborn, or shameless, but she is certainly not dumb.

To her credit, she’s exceptionally sharp and calculating in addition to being determined… and that has carried her a very long way.

Joking about the death of one of the two Democrats seeking the presidency, if not inappropriate, is certainly not classy, and is further evidence that Dave Reichert himself does not have good judgment. ...   more »

A week from Tuesday (June 10) Virginia holds its primaries and the one we’re watching most closely is between the progressive Blue America-endorsed Leslie Byrne and a reactionary Joe Lieberman/Zell Miller-type Insider, Gerry Connolly, who worked for a major war profiteer firm, a story I broke at DownWithTyranny a few days ago. Friday, it hit the Washington Post and suddenly the Blue America donations for Leslie Byrne have gone through the roof.

We’re in the middle of a contest with Air America and to vote which candidate gets an Air America check, all you have to do is add one penny to your donation on our Blue America page. Leslie and Gerry Connolly are in a neck and neck race that will go right down to the wire. It’s a case of “More Democrats” or “More and Better Democrats.” Connolly is far from better. He’s trying to pose as a progressive but his record conforms to the worst stereotypes of the corporate Democrat and threatens to cost the party a long-awaited takeover. Connolly has been mired in questions about his employment with Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), one of the worst of the major defense contractors, ...   more »

Barack Obama resigned Saturday from his Chicago church — where controversial sermons by his former pastor and other ministers had created repeated political headaches for the frontrunner for the Democratic presidential nomination — his campaign confirmed…

After a nearly 10-hour marathon meeting of the Democratic party’s rules committee, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton came away with a total of 24 more pledged delegates, but today’s decisions on the seating of Florida and Michigan delegates fell far short of what her campaign had hoped.
