Pia de Solenni, of The Family Research Council was at the Supreme Court for the argument on the Ayotte v. Planned Parenthood case and to speak at a press conference after the hearing in support of requiring parental notification for an abortion with no exception for the health of the mother. Solenni stated that she had to give permission for her daughter to get her ears pierced or to go on a school trip.

Ironically, Mia de Solenni, Pia's 15 year old daughter was on a ski trip with her 10th grade class from St. Mary's Parochial School. Mia broke her leg and was taken to an emergency room where doctors discovered that she was pregnant and had internal injuries in addition to the broken leg.

Mia required an emergency abortion to save her life. The hospital could not contact Mia's mother Pia because Pia's cellphone was turned off while she was at the Supreme Court argument and press conference. The hospital then contacted a local judge who was out to lunch. Another judge was found who approved the emergency abortion. This delayed the procedure 37 minutes and Mia died on the operating table due to the delay.

The attorney for the surgeon and the hospital stated that "The New Hampshire parental notification law does not have an exception for a medical emergency and we were not willing to go to court to defend providing the medical procedure under New Hampshire's blanket emergency medical exemption since it is unclear that the blanket exemption pertains in cases involving abortion."

"We could see Pia de Solenni on television stating her support for the law that was preventing us from treating her daughter at the very moment we were trying to contact her. This has been the saddest and most frustrating day of my medical career," added the surgeon.
