The right wing is very confused about Oliver Stone's new movie, "World Trade Center." Their problem is that they love this film.L. Brent Bozell III, founder of the Parents Television Council, called it “a masterpiece.”
Conservative columnist Cal Thomas said the film is "one of the greatest pro-American, pro-family, pro-faith, pro-male, flag-waving, God Bless America films you will ever see.”
“God Bless Oliver Stone” wrote Clifford May in the National Review.
To these groups, Oliver Stone represents everything bad about liberal Hollywood. He made the anti-war films "Born on the Fourth of July," "Platoon" and "Heaven & Earth." He mocked right wing talk radio and warned of its dangers in 1988's "Talk Radio." "Wall Street" lambasted everything the right wing holds dear. And JFK implicated all of the bastards in the Kennedy assassination.
But now, Stone has made a film that they all love. The story follows the rescue of two New York police officers from the ruins of the World Trade Center on September 11.
But is this film a departure for Stone? Not at all.
The man the right wing loves to hate and call un-American is really as American as they come. What they don't understand is that liberals are as pro-America as they are. What Stone does with this film is take Sept. 11 back from Bush and proclaim it an American tragedy that affected everyone.
While Stone is vilified by the right for portraying recent historical events from a liberal point of view, he has not changed with his current movie. "World Trade Center" is also told from a liberal viewpoint. What mystifies the right is that our view is the same as theirs.
note: The author and Mr. Stone share a birthday and the author has appeared in two Stone films, Born on the Fourth of July and JFK.
