Journalist Lawrence O'Donnell in the Huffington Post today predicts that
ex-Democrat and still Senator for now Joe Lieberman will drop out of his self
imposed contest against the Democratic Party's standard bearer, Ned Lamont, in
this November's U.S. Senate race in Connecticut.
If it comes true, O'Donnell's prediction will be good news for Democrats,
for Connecticut, for the likely balance in the U.S. Senate after 2006, and for
the whole country. What I find interesting is to speculate on where Joe will go
after he's dropped out.
It's no secret that Joe Lieberman coveted Secretary of Defense Don
Rumsfeld's job. And with all of Lieberman's connections with defense
contractors, why wouldn't he want a job like that? He could behave like a real
Republican -- getting rich and ever more powerful behind closed doors. It's also
known that Lieberman, hours after his defeat to Lamont, got a phone call from VP
Dick Cheney, in essense a confirmation that Kissing George is still interested
in him.
If Lieberman does not go into the Bush cabinet as defense chief (the main
procurement agent for the federal government) or some other post, what will Joe
do?
I don't think he will fade quietly into total obscurity. Only partial
obcurity, without scrutiny. I think Joe Lieberman will take a high paying low
profile post in the arms industry.
Well done, Joe. Who says you can't win after losing? It's the Republican
way.
