Four soldiers accused of murdering three Iraqis face the death penalty in their upcoming murder trail. The government accuses them of cold-blooded murder. Their defense - they were told the men were al Qaida. They were told to kill all men at this location. One of the soldiers was stabbed. Another shot at. They were following normal rules of engagement and they were following orders from above, they claim.
Far be it from me to defend the military. To me, the only good soldier is one who has gone to Canada because he or she understands how criminal and corrupt their commander in chief really is. But this case is extraordinary. If convicted, they will be the first U.S. soldiers hanged since 1960.
These four soldiers come from Fort Campbell in Kentucky, by far the worst military base in the country, as far as I'm concerned. Fort Campbell has the honor of being the base that has dismissed more soldiers under the so-called "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. It's the base where Barry Winchell was murdered because he dated a woman who was transgendered. And it's a base, I believe, where soldiers will be charged with murder to cover up orders from superiors.
As part of the soldiers' defense, however, these soldiers need to reveal where their orders came from. Who gave these soldiers the idea that al Qaida even operates in Iraq? Who confused the war against terrorism with the war going on in Iraq? Those are the people who should receive the death penalty.
